New London Connecticut – “The Whaling City”

We’re excited to introduce another amazing addition to the MapGeo family – New London, Connecticut! Located in Southeastern Connecticut, the City of New London is home to the United States Coast Guard Academy. The city has a long and proud maritime history. Also known as the Whaling City, New London was once the second largest whaling port in the world. The city’s Thames River Heritage Park is a collection of nearly 20 historic sites – highlighted by Fort Trumbull on Shaw Neck and the Lyman Allyn Museum (located just outside the Coast Guard Academy), which was founded by the daughter of a wealthy whaling merchant.

New London’s new MapGeo site is a great addition to a city with so much great history. Starr Street, a small collection of historic houses, gives a glimpse of the city’s whaling heyday. New London’s site features thematic layers that include the historic district, as well as new and historic aerial imagery. The site also displays useful property information such as flood hazard areas and useful nautical features, with NOAA navigation charts.
